»Can you go back? Would you like to return, Mr. Abrahamyan? Do you have family here? Do they like it here, or do they spend most of their time with their community?« Voice-over questions. Questions about integration and assimilation. It is dark. Early morning. The father gets his son ready for the day. Intimate rituals before they head off to daycare. There, both face the day’s farewell. Morning circle can begin. The children are prepared for the day with rhymes and songs. And yet, saying goodbye is also a form of separation. Morning Circle makes the tensions of life in exile palpable. Beneath the smooth, gray concrete surface, things are simmering. The circle tightens with intensity.

In protest, environmental activists throw mashed potatoes at a painting by Monet. The unfinished building site of the nuclear powerplant Kalkar, which had never been in operation, is the location of a noisy amusement park. The »Forum on the Search for a Final Repository« grapples the legacy of nuclear waste, whilst a steamboat rides down the Moselle with a handful of senior citizens campaigning for climate justice and nuclear disarmament. Impressions from our lives in this permanent, man-made catastrophe intertwine kaleidoscopically to form a compelling, at once oppressive and bitter, comic beacon in which nuclear waste is a communication problem and the future must remain a foreign concept. For when the radiation cats glow and the merry-go-round spins in the cooling tower, neither the old nor the last generation have a way out.

An ancient birth ritual, still performed today. Words from a language long forgotten are sung as an invitation to life. A mother’s footsteps trace protective spells around her newborn, while flames struggle to exist against strong winds. Inspired by a rare moment in history — a landmark court case where, defying silence, a woman achieves legal recognition for her daughter, born of a love affair in Egypt — within a system where a father’s refusal denies a child a name, legal identity, and basic rights. Birth stays away from the courtroom and instead asks cinema to make a life visible from the very first breath.

A composer recounts a dream from his youth that inspired the slow movement of his first string quartet, Prayer of the Sea. The dream, depicting a peaceful dissolution into the sea and wind, symbolized his future death. Decades later, rediscovering a drawing from the quartet's premiere - perfectly capturing the dream’s essence - revived its emotions. Now older, he reflects on the dream’s message: a serene acceptance of life’s inevitable end. Prayer of the Sea is an audiovisual elegy offering a calm perspective on the universal experience of passing.
